Sonic Youth take back the inspiration that they donated to American alternative rock, being fascinated by introspective, melancholic, acid and vaguely psychedelic atmospheres of grunge. The path is the one traced by Goo, with their attention focused on songs. But punk roots are further and further away, and the intertwining of guitar melodies is transformed in compact riffs with noisy explosions, functional in amplifying the alternation of anger and weary disillusion that is exploding in the music of the early 90s. Powerful and clear production of this album (Butch Vig and Andy Wallace collaborate with Sonic Youth) is the demonstration that Dirty isn’t, and doesn’t want to be, an independent album, yet an alternative way to play rock. The result, thanks to experimental background of the band, is perfectly achieved.
